Things went catastrophically wrong. It was a real train wreck. We tried to {compensate|mitigate the situation, but it was like trying to stop a flood with a spoon. We're still picking up the debris and feeling the impact of this unmitigated catastrophe.

This crisis has spiraled out of control. It's a total fiasco. We've tried just about everything to fix it, but nothing seems to be effective. At this point, it feels like we're hopelessly stuck. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a nightmare of epic proportions.
That's So Cringe, It's Hilarious (In a Way)
Sometimes you find yourself face-to-face with situations so horrifically bad that you can't help but smile. It's like your brain tries to make sense of the sheer extent of unadulterated absurdity and just resigns itself to fate, opting for laughter as a coping defense.
But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not really actually that amusing. It's just plain horrifyingly awful. And the laughter you were experiencing morphs into a sigh.
After all is said and done, you are left with a sense of bewilderment. You wonder about the meaning of it all. Was this a joke?
Or were we just simply unfortunate enough to witness this spectacle unfold?
Tragedy of Epic Proportions
The earthquake struck with devastating force, consuming entire cities in its wake. Buildings shattered like fragile toys, and the screams that ensued was deafening. The rest of the day was an absolute nightmare. Everything. I stay awake.
By the time I got home, I was physically and emotionally wiped out. This day, this atrocious day will be forever remembered as an epic fail.

It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then everything went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to scream into a pillow.
